THE TUESDAY SELF LED SEMINARS
4th year Fine Art 2009/10 - Semester One
RONAN McCREA
The “Tuesday Self Led Seminars” are a series of seminars
that will run in Semester One co-ordinated by Ronan
McCrea.
Who: All 4th year students
Where: The Seminar Room, Portland Row
When: Every Tuesday from 2pm to 4 pm
Starting: Tuesday 6th October until Tuesday 13th December.
(Except for Review week on 3rd Nov., and CRIT
week on 17th Nov.)
How: Every 4th year student is invited to submit a
proposal for a topic on which they would wish
to make a 15 minute presentation, followed by a
group discussion.
From all the submissions received, Ronan McCrea
will select a number of presentations for the
seminars.
Presentation topics will be organised together
by theme or interest in groups A through F
order to facilitate discussion. The seminars
will be scheduled in advance, and information
circulated
It is expected each seminar will consist of 3
or 4 presentations.
The discussion following each presentation is
very important and all students are expected to
participate.
A tutorial for each group will precede each
seminar the following week. The function of the
tutorial is to refine topics, and identify
relevant contexts. Reference material and
modest reading requirements for each seminar
may be proposed and circulated. The full group
can, if they wish, sit in on these tutorials.
Aim:
The aim of the Tuesday Seminars is to begin a
conversation on how we, as artists, relate what we do to
the wider world and wider cultural and artistic
discourse.
Art does not stand in splendid (or squalid) isolation to
the wider world. It relates, to other art, art history,
ideas of places, ideas of the body, philosophical ideas,
politics, institutions, other cultural forms such as
cinema or literature.
The aim of the seminars is to learn how to think and
discuss how our artistic work is in relationship to the
world, beyond our own subjectivity, and though listening,
gain an insight into mode of thinking of our peers.
The proposal for a topic can be a question you might have
that relates to your work and artistic ideas. (Sometimes
the right question is as important as the answer.)One may
propose a question without having an answer.
Each presentation will address a topic relevant to the
student’s artistic interests and work. Visual material
may be included in your presentation. Computer, TV and
projector will be available in the seminar room for this
purpose.
If you would like to change your presentation idea as the
programme develops, that is ok, but please inform the
group in advance.
Examples of Topic / questions:
• Why is the “meaning” of an artwork not solely
contained within the artwork itself? Why can’t art
just art speak for itself?
• I’m a painter – Why is Luc Tuymans so influential
for students of painting over recent years?
• I want to discuss the relationship between by my
painting practice and photography.
• Can a lecture be art? I was thinking of giving one
as part of my degree show.
• I wish to discuss my artistic ideas in relation to
the the concept of “site-specificity”
• I want to make a point about some stuff in society
that concerns me. Are my artistic ideas a good way
of doing that?
• I wish to discuss how the concepts of “the ordinary”
and “the everyday” are central to my artistic ideas.
